What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese treatment method that involves inserting very thin, single-use, sterilized needles into specific points – called acupuncture points – all over the body. The needles are so fine that you barely feel them go into your skin, and the entire process is comfortable and extremely relaxing.

How does acupuncture work?
The traditional Chinese explanation begins with the idea that your vital energy – called qi or chi – flows throughout your body along meridians or channels. It is the disruption of this flow of energy that leads to health problems. Acupuncture points are specific points along these qi meridians, and each point is associated with an organ or system of the body. By needling the appropriate acupuncture points, the flow of blood and qi is corrected and the illness or disease is improved.
The Western explanation maintains that inserting the acupuncture needles stimulates the release of the body’s natural painkillers (endorphins), induces relaxation, and increases blood flow. It is these beneficial effects – not the correction of qi – that results in reduced symptoms and an increased sense of well being.

What does an Arizona acupuncture session involve?
A typical Arizona acupuncture session lasts between 30-60 minutes. After an initial medical history to determine your symptoms, you lie down and relax in a dim, quiet room. The
acupuncturist inserts from five to 20 needles in the appropriate spots for your condition. This is not painful at all; there is only slight tingling or pressure. The actual process of inserting the needles take about 10-15 minutes, and the rest of the time you lie still, relax, and let the needles work their magic.

What should I expect at Human Health Specialists?
When you make your appointment, you will be asked to fill out a complete health history evaluation prior to coming into the office. This helps us create your file and keep your practitioner aware of your condition and concerns. We’ll ask you to arrive 10-15 minutes early and you can relax in our state-of-the-art waiting room. Once it’s time for your appointment, you’ll be taken into a private treatment room where you’ll get a detailed health history and evaluation by your acupuncturist, which usually lasts between 30 minutes and 1 hour, depending on your condition, illnesses, or concerns. This detailed evaluation helps us determine how we can best help you and how we can make your acupuncture sessions most effective.
After you discuss everything with one of our board certified Arizona acupuncturists, they will dim the lights and you will be asked to lie down and relax on one of our oversized, comfortable treatment beds where your acupuncturist will then start your treatment.
