Fish, Pharmaceuticals, and 5-HTP
There’s an old adage that goes, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” If that adage would have been written by a pharmaceutical company, it would probably read more like, “If you catch a fish you can make a synthetic form of it in a laboratory which you can patent and have exclusive rights to sell. You can then give this synthetic fish a catchy name, like Salmonal, and sell it to a million men for a huge profit. It won’t taste as good as a real fish, and it’ll cause dry mouth, constipation, ulcers, nose bleeds, seizures, ear infections, and heart palpitations, but man will still be hungry, so he’ll have to buy all of your other synthetic fish, too.”
